New F/A-18 Hornet Variant
McDonnell Douglas and Northrop Grumman have agreed to jointly develop an electronic warfare derivative of the two-seat F/A-18F Hornet. Called the F/A-18 C2W (Command and Control Warfare) Variant, the new Hornet is being developed as a private venture with a view to eventually replacing the Grumman EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft when it is retired from US Navy service. Based on the next generation F/A-18E (single seat) and F (two seat) Hornets now in development, the C2W Variant requires no structural changes to the basic airframe and can therefore be built on the same production line. The first F/A-18E was due to be rolled out as this issue goes to press, first flight is planned for December this year with operational service scheduled for 2001.
