Commercial Sesse First Gps Nav Data Card Approach
AirServices Australia has successfully flown the first Australian test of the Global Positioning System (GPS) using a Nav Data Card, a key step in implementing the GPS system for arrivals and primary means navigation. The flight was carried out in a Piper Navajo in late August. The Nav Data Card is a computer memory card, about the size of a credit card, which is programmed with GPS approach patterns into certain Australian airports. The card is inserted into the GPS and information for approaches can be read from the GPS screen. The test card used in the flight contains an overlay of current approach patterns for several airports in the southern NSW region, the flight testing taking in the GPS overlay approaches at Goulburn, Cootamundra, Wagga and Canberra. GPS non precision approaches are planned to be available to pilots by the middle of next year.
