McDonnell Douglas has predicted significant growth in the number of freighters in use through to 2013, with growth in particular occurring in the number of large widebody freighters (refer text). McDonnell Douglas forecasts that the number of widebody freighters (primarily 747Fs plus some MD-11Fs) in service will grow to around 745 in 2013, compared with 143 in 1993. The engine manufacturer also forecast strong growth in the number of medium size freighters (DC-8-70s, A300s, 707s and DC-10s) from 365 to 710 in 2013. Pictured is an Eva Air MD-11 freighter.

Staas Wins Air India Contract
The fortunes of ASTA Aircraft Services (ASTAAS) look to be further improving with the winning of a contract to perform heavy maintenance work on two Air India Boeing 747-300s. The new contract is in addition to other recently won work, the overhaul of two 747s for British Airways and another pair for All Nippon Airways. The contracts mean that ASTAAS’s 450 employees will now be kept fully occupied until May next year.
