Airline Profile – Airlink

At an exciting time in the evolution of the airline, Barry Mayo, the new General Manager, will be carefully steering Airlink through a massive expansion programme that will see it become Australia’s largest regional carrier. At a time when many airlines are still rationalising services, Airlink has increased its capacity by some 130% since November 1994 and doubled its fleet size acquiring three BAe 146 series 200, two series 300 and one series 100 aircraft to add to its existing fleet of three BAe 146-100s.

Airlink in the same period has also opened new routes in the hitherto Ansett domain of Western Australia. The move into WA signals Qantas’ intent to meet Ansett at every corner of the country, and in so doing breaking the monopoly that the privately owned carrier had enjoyed for what some would suggest was far too long. WA also commits Airlink to the essence of its role in the Qantas Group. As Barry Mayo explains, his airline is vital in establishing and consolidating regional markets that would prove non-viable for its big brother, Qantas.
