Piper has laid claim to being the world’s leading manufacturer of single engine aircraft during 1994, based on figures compiled by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). According to GAMA, nine companies built 444 single engined light aircraft during 1994, of which Piper built 108. Piper also accounted for 24 out of the 55 piston twins built during 1994. During 1995 Piper plans to build at least 177 aircraft, compared with 132 in 1994. Current production is of the Warrior II, Arrow, Seminole, Seneca IV, Archer III, Saratoga II HP (pictured) and Malibu Mirage. (Piper)

American To Head Casa

Leroy Keith, an American, has been appointed head of the new Civil Aviation Safety Agency (CASA). Mr Keith has already arrived in Australia from the USA. His background includes working as a civilian test engineer with the US Air Force, a research engineer with Boeing, head of the US Federal Aviation Administration’s Transport Airplane Directorate Aircraft Certification Service and most recently a vice president of quality process for the Douglas Aircraft division of McDonnell Douglas. Mr Keith’s appointment follows an extensive national and international search. Meanwhile the CAA is now searching for a chief executive for the Airways Corporation of Australia (ACA), which will be responsible for ATC, rescue and fire-fighting services. The Civil Aviation Safety Agency and the Airways Corp are due to become operational mid-year when the CAA will no longer exist.

Big Break For Young Avionics Designer

Australian Nicholas Cohn has been awarded a $20,000 grant from Nescafe’s Big Break encouragement programme. Twenty-one-year-old Nicholas has designed a computer-based flight instrumentation system that is uncluttered and pilot-friendly. Says Nicholas “As a pilot myself I found I wanted a less cluttered, pilot-friendly panel so I decided to design one.” His user-friendly panel allows the pilot to see and understand what is happening on an artificial horizon, rather than having to comprehend many different instruments. “The pilot only needs to key in the route, height and other variables and the computer puts them all on the screen sort of like a computer game.” Nicholas’s system is based on those that are now commonplace on modern commercial and military aircraft, but is as yet unavailable for GA. Nicholas plans to use his $20,000 Nescafe Big Break to develop the system to a demonstration stage and hopes to eventually sell it worldwide.
