Two Of A Kind Arguably the world's most advanced airliner, the Boeing 777 was recently brought face to face with what really started it all for Boeing, the 247 airliner. Despite being separated in time by six decades, the two aircraft have a number of similarities, including their Boeing parentage, Pratt & Whitney engines (the PW4000 series is one of three engines offered on the 777), and were both ordered in quantity by United Airlines. In other 777 news the aircraft has visited Europe for the first time, having recently completed cold weather trials in Sweden.

Raf Orders Hercules

After months of speculation, Britain’s Royal Air Force has decided to order 25 new generation C-130J Hercules transports as the first step in replacing its fleet of 60 C-130Ks which are now well into their third decade of service.

The order comes in the face of opposition from proponents of the proposed European Future Large Aircraft (FLA), a larger and more expensive aircraft. The Hercules acquisition leaves the door open for an FLA order at a later date, although the RAF’s immediate need is for an aircraft which can enter service in the not too distant future as some of the older Hercules need replacing fairly urgently. The C-130J will be available from 1996-1997, while the FLA (if it is built) will not enter service until well after the turn of the century.
