Regional Airline Directory
The Australian Regional Airline Industry
The Australian regional airline industry is presently under intense political and media scrutiny mainly as a result of the Seaview accident on October 2. While we may see some operators fall by the wayside, for those who continue on they will do so in the knowledge that they have exceeded all safety requirements required by the CAA and that they will have the confidence of their passengers. This year in our Regional Airline Directory we have identified 43 active operators so the figure remains fairly constant. Last year we commented on the fact that there was a trend developing in regards to a high turnover of operators and this year is no exception. For the twelve months under review we have recorded nine new operators while we have lost nine. This compares with the 1992/93 figure which saw the emergence of seven new airlines as against the loss of twelve. It is worth recording that since the start of regional airline operations in July 1967, our records show that over 260 airlines have been involved in this sector of the aviation industry while the yearly average since 1982 of airlines starting operations and of airlines closing down has been eight in each case. During the period Nov 1 1993 through to October 31 1994 the following changes have taken place:
Air Cairns
A Cairns based charter operator who commenced RPT services during November 1993 over routes in the Torres Strait vacated by Flight West Airlines. Air Cairns later ceased RPT operations in February 1994 and returned to charter flying.
