Single Aviation Market Stall The Australian Government's decision to stall the single aviation market between Australia and New Zealand has surprised and alarmed Air New Zealand. ANZ says its plans were well advanced to enter the Australian domestic market though there was no tangible evidence to physically suggest this. (Julian Green)

Thumbs Up For Australian Aircraft
An aircraft made in Victoria has been given the “thumbs up” by pilot Ray Patchett who says the aircraft is one of the most cost effective in its class. The aircraft is a top dresser, built by Gippsland Aeronautics and the GA 200 is the first new type of top dressing aircraft to be imported to New Zealand for 15 years. Mr Patchett of Patchett Ag-Air, of Blenheim, Marlborough, at the top of the South Island, says the GA 200 “fills a niche” created by smaller farm sizes. He points out that his new aircraft needs only a third of the price for a re-manufactured engine compared with the well known, long established and more powerful Fletcher top dresser. The GA 200 – believed to cost around $NZ200,000 – was being assessed for its New Zealand certificate of airworthiness soon after its flight from Victoria. Mr Patchett is the New Zealand distributor for the aircraft.
Orion New Wings Study
The RNZAF’s six 28 year old Orion aircraft could still be flying when they are nearly half a century old if the Government approves a project by a United States company. The New Zealand Defence Ministry’s annual report says studies have determined that re-winging the Orions is feasible. The work involves replacing the outer wings, centre section lower skin planks and horizontal stabilisers. The work, if approved by the Government, will be known as Project Kestrel and is expected to start in 1996. The risk management study by Sage Analytics of the USA is expected to be completed soon.
