Mcdonnell Douglas Has Licensed Sun Valley California Based Sheffield Manufacturing To Provide Weapon Systems Support For The F-4 Phantom. McDonnell Douglas has licensed Sun Valley California based Sheffield Manufacturing to provide weapon systems support for the F-4 Phantom. Sheffield will use the license, which grants the company unlimited access to technical data and engineering support for the F-4, to perform repair services, design and develop modifications and manufacture spare parts. Approximately 1100 Phantoms remain in service worldwide, and many operators are upgrading their aircraft for service past the turn of the century. Germany for example is fitting its F-4Fs (pictured) with the Hughes APG-65 radar as on the F/A-18 Hornet, while Japan and Israel are also upgrading their aircraft. (Paul Merritt)

Caa Releases Annual Report
Amongst all the controversy surrounding the CAA, the Authority has quietly released its annual report, which records an operating profit after tax for the financial year ending June 30 of $55m. Revenue for the year was $574m, down on the previous FY’s total of $670m. Operating profit before abnormal items and tax meanwhile was $73m. Most of the Authorities revenue came from airways charges $470m, while other sources of income were excises $24m, safety services $55m, regulatory services $3.6m and others $20m. It is interesting to note the return to government from the CAA in that period. Income tax paid was $25m, on top of which the CAA paid a dividend to its owner, the Federal Government, of $27.5m for a total payback of $52.5m, without even taking into account the remaining net profit of $27.5m.
Ga Wants Brereton Out
The General Aviation Association (GAA) has strongly rejected comments made by Minister for Transport Laurie Brereton about the commuter airline and charter sectors of general aviation in the wake of the Seaview crash and said he needs to be replaced. The GAA says the minister is using general aviation as another scapegoat to cover up his own deficiencies and consequently the industry no longer has confidence in him to effectively administer the aviation industry. According to the GAA, comments made by Mr Brereton on television implied that all commuter and charter operators were unsafe, something which is obviously not true. The GAA says that Mr Brereton is “again taking the easy way out and should defend the GA sector in the same way he had with the airlines. The actions of the minister was not good enough and there was a lot of anger in the industry which had absolutely no confidence in him on this issue which had degenerated into a political football with GA in the middle”.
