Malaysia Wants More Hornets

Malaysia has approached the Us Navy and McDonnell Douglas for information on the price and availability of 10 or 16 F/A-18D Hornets in addition to the eight it ordered in December 1993. The first batch of eight is scheduled for delivery in late 1996, but any extra aircraft cannot be financed by Malaysia until the start of its next five-year plan in 1996. McDonnell Douglas is in a position to start deliveries from October 1997 if an order is placed next year.

Malaysia’s military aircraft procurement is complicated by its order for 18 Mig-29s, seen by many observers as an unnecessary duplication of role and logistics demands for a small air force. Some analysts see the latest F/A-18 requests as a sign that Malaysia is having second thoughts about the Mig order; although a contract has been signed, performance and maintainability shortfalls are causing concern ahead of first deliveries. Russia, however, remains confident that it will deliver the first Mig-29 to Malaysia in 1995.
