ANZ has been so successful with its weekly 737 snow charters from Brisbane to Christchurch that it is considering upgrading to 767s for next season. Sadly, ANZ appears to be the only airline with any appreciation of what long-term potential a deregulated Tasman holds. (Lloyd Fox)

An Opportunity Lost?
Technically speaking, next month the Tasman becomes a free air market theoretically linking Australia and New Zealand as one single aviation market. Technically speaking this means that it should be as easy and convenient to fly between Christchurch and Coolangatta as it presently is to fly between, say, Adelaide and Sydney. At least that’s the theory.
The fact is that since this grand open skies future vision was depicted in Prime Minister Keating’s One Nation statement of February 92 little has happened to actually make this policy fact. As sad as it seems all concerned are about as enthused with linking the two country’s airways as they would be by amalgamating their respective football teams.
