S-02, the second pre production EC 135, made its first flight from Eurocopter Germany's development centre in Ottobrunn (near Munich) on April 16, just two months after the maiden flight of the first aircraft (refer p93 April '94 M). This second EC 135 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW206B turboshafts, while the first has Turbomeca Arrius-2B engines. VFR certification of the EC 135 is expected for the end of 1995, or early '96. (Eurocopter)

EH 101 Offered to US Forces
McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems has teamed with EH Industries to offer the EH 101 to the US armed forces. McDonnell Douglas and EH Industries (jointly owned by Westland and Agusta) say they have identified large requirements for new technology helicopters in the coming years and have targeted the US’s Medium Lift Replacement Helicopter (MLRH) programme. The Bell/Boeing V-22 Osprey is designed to fulfil the MLRH requirement, although Westland has said that the EH 101 could complement, rather than replace, the V-22.
A model of the EH 101 in US Marine Corps livery was displayed at the US Navy League’s Sea Air Space Exposition in Washington recently. If the proposal is successful, McDonnell Douglas would build the EH 101 at its Mesa, Arizona facility late in the decade. Few changes would need to be made to the EH 101 to allow it to conform to US requirements, according to Westland. A US version of the EH 101 would have a unit cost of between $US15 and 20 million, while the current unit cost estimate for the V-22 is $US32 million. Bell/Boeing hopes to reduce this figure, setting themselves a target price of $US29 million.
