On the Airbands
Richard Watson is General Manager of New Zealand company Flight-Deck Productions, and is a keen airband enthusiast, owning an AOR AR-1500 scanner radio. Richard is very happy with our book “Listening In to Aircraft Radio”, taking a copy with him to the USA, so he could extract important American air frequencies to load into the AR-1500! He monitored this classic exchange at the time of the recent 6.8 Richter Scale earthquake in Los Angeles, at LAX. The air-ground conversation took place during one of the aftershocks felt across most of California. This particular aftershock brought down ceiling panels in the terminal building where Richard and his wife were seated.
LAX TOWER: “Attention all aircraft, there is a strong earthquake in progress!” UNITED: “United 72, that’s good man … I need all the excuses I can get when I’m landing!”
