Twin Otter Fleet Changes

In October 1966 the DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft was seen in our region for the first time with the arrival in Australia of -100 VH-TGR, which carried the Trans-Australia Airlines Sunbird colours and -100 CF-UXE, which carried the TAA mainland colour scheme of the day. Nearly 30 years on the Twin Otter continues to be a much sought after type by operators in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Hevi Lift based at Mount Hagen took delivery of its first Twin Otter in early February. DHC-6-300 N528SA msn 528 arrived at Cairns on the 11th from Tarawa and Hoiara after completing its trans Pacific ferry flight. The Twin Otter carries Hevilift’s green and black colours and is now registered P2-HCF. Another Hevi Lift aircraft noted in this period was Lockheed L-382G PK-PLW which visited Brisbane on January 30. The Hercules, which carried Hevi Lift colours, was operating on lease from Pelita Air in Indonesia.

Milne Bay Air based in Pt Moresby continues to expand its fleet of Twin Otters with the recent purchase of a seventh unit. DHC-6-200 P2-RDH, which was previously operated by Talair, was taken out of storage at Mareeba before being ferried from Cairns to Pt Moresby on Feb 13. On entry into service with Milne Bay Air the Twin Otter became P2-MBS. Still awaiting delivery to Milne Bay Air is the former Fiji Air DHC-6-300 DQ-FEU which at presstime was undergoing preservice maintenance at Archerfield.
