Sunstate Airlines

The recent rationalisation of Qantas’ Queensland operations by the merger of Australian Regional Airlines of Queensland (ARAQ) and the original Brisbane based Sunstate in October 1993 has created a stronger and more viable business.

General manager for Sunstate, Ashley Kilroy, said of the merger, “It was simply inefficient having these two separate airlines owned by the same organisation in the same state. The operations were not competitive, and therefore the joining of the two was administratively quite easy. ” Previously duplicated management positions including general and engineering managers, financial controllers, operations managers and chief pilots have been rationalised and together with an increase in the flexibility of aircraft utilisation will allow Sunstate to attain the cost control measures it sees as critical to the continued prosperity of the airline whose history dates back to the nostalgic days of Bush Pilots Airways.
