Air New Zealand Coy on Australian Plans

Air New Zealand’s Australian Option

Don’t hold your breath waiting for Air New Zealand to buy control of Ansett Australia.

Despite all the operational arguments favouring it, Air New Zealand’s Chief Executive and Managing Director, James McCrea, downplays the likelihood of such a move.

That appears to be part of Air New Zealand’s strategy to remain tight lipped about what it will do once it gains the right to fly domestic Australian routes. Under the Single Aviation Market pact, Air New Zealand could start flying in November under the same terms as any domestic airline on any route within Australia. New Zealand’s flag carrier has long expressed an interest in such rights, especially since Ansett New Zealand started competing against it at home in 1987, but Air New Zealand is now playing its cards very close to its corporate chest over whether, when, where, and under what conditions it will exercise its new Australian rights.
