• A ceremony was held at Cherry Point, North Carolina on January 12 to mark the introduction of the first US Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier II into service with its Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic. The aircraft is the first of 12 pilot production AV-8Bs to be delivered to the USMC this year, to be followed by 21 limited production aircraft by 1985. By then, 33 Harrier IIs will be in service at Cherry Point, when operational status will be achieved by the first USMC Harrier II squadron.

• A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Rolls-Royce and General Electric on February 3 to provide for the two companies to participate in each other’s current high technology engines, the 40,000lb RB211-535E4 and 56,000-60,000lb CF6-80C2 respectively. Rolls-Royce has no directly competitive engine to the-80C2 while GE has no engine in the -535E4 category. The first flight of the Rolls-Royce RB. 211-535E4, installed in a Boeing 757, took place at Seattle on Feb 3.
