Gps Navigation-Where to Now?

At a recent briefing given by Trimble Navigation Ltd in Canberra it was stated that a decision between GPS and MLS as the future precision approach landing system must be made within the next two years, due amongst other things, to the rapidly approaching demise of ILS because of frequency problems; already ICAO has started giving up ILS frequencies in Europe.

In the same vein, earlier this year US AOPA in a strongly worded editorial urged the cancellation of MLS on the basis that it had been outmoded by GPS which, AOPA maintained, held great promise as the overall navigation and approach aid of the future.

Unfortunately, in the enthusiastic rush to embrace GPS as the be all and end all, there has been a failure to take due cognisance of the steady development by ICAO of plans for the Future Air Navigation System (FANS) of which GPS as it presently stands might form part.
