A large cross section of flying machines make up the New Allocations section this month, from two Australian made Kavanagh hot air balloons to the first Boeing 757 airliner to be registered in Australia. The 757, AWE, was built for Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services and was to be operated by Trans Brazil, but this deal fell through and the aircraft was registered in the USA instead. It was later leased to Zambia Airways as a freighter based at Lusaka but was operated by National Air Charters. It arrived in Melbourne at the end of its lease to Zambia Airways via Mauritius, Cocos Islands and Perth.

Two other types new to the Australian register are the Maule Tri-Gear, AOJ, and the Aviatika CLM. Not much is known about the Aviatika other that it was built in Russia in 1992, it has a fixed tricycle undercarriage, its MTOW is 450kg and it is powered by a Rotax 582 two stroke engine which makes it one of the very few Russian ultralights. It will be interesting to learn more about this unusual aircraft. The Maule is of course a development of the MX-7 but fitted with a nosewheel instead of the more traditional tailwheel.
