Reno Air Races 93- And Who Said It Can Only Happen in America? – That’s About to Change!

The 1993 US National Championship Air Races (NCAR), popularly known as the Reno Air Races were held September 13-19. This year the NCAR celebrated its diamond anniversary by reaching the unique milestone of 30 consecutive years of air racing.

This event is held at Reno Stead Airport, 15km north of downtown Reno on route 395 so as not to conflict with RPT and Nevada Air National Guard (F-4 & C-130) operations at the joint civil/military Reno Cannon Airport.

Weather conditions were mixed but generally favourable as expected for the time of year in this high desert region. Sensational blue skies and highs of around 25°C pampered the 50,000+ crowds for the concluding two days and for the whole event was estimated at 150,000+. Total purse on offer was $US565,000 and the championships were divided into four categories of aircraft, those being biplane, formula one (homebuilt), AT-6/Harvard and unlimited. Because of this the closed circuit course varied in length and ranged from 3. 1 miles (5km) for biplanes (max 187kt/346km/h) to 9. 1 miles (14. 7km) for unlimited entries (max 417kt/772km/h). Generally heats lasted six laps and finals eight laps.
