October 1-Italy. Naples is taken. Hitler orders Kesselring to hold a line south of Rome rather than retire farther north.

Australia. Catalina A24-67 of 11 Squadron, captained by F/O D McDiarmed, is shot down by AA fire during a torpedo attack on Pomelaa Harbour in the Celebes. Naval Observer, L/Cdr P Carr, the leading Australian mine warfare officer, is the only survivor. Captured by the Japanese, during interrogation he pretends to be attached to RAAF HQ only for ship recognition instruction. The ruse succeeds and his true value is never discovered.
