Russian Aerospace Restructures in Order to Survive
Political and economic upheaval has thrown Russia’s massive and highly capable aerospace industry into an unprecedented state of chaos.
The collapse of communism and the death of the great socialist experiment has left this enormous aviation industry, which employs three million skilled workers, in an empty void which it is beginning, ever so slowly, to fill. There are little or no markets for its products and the move away from a centrally planned economy to a capitalist market driven system has brought massive problems with few solutions. Not surprising perhaps in this light is the variety of new and often fanciful proposals, while an ever growing number of cooperative ventures with western manufacturers have sprung up as the industry struggles to rationalise and reshape itself for the future.
The truly massive scale of the Russian aerospace industry is only now being appreciated by the large number of western executives visiting the country in search of new opportunities. Nurtured over the decades of communist rule and looked upon as the pinnacle of Russian and Soviet technological achievements, the Soviet system fostered a massive number of design bureaux with production plants spanning the country, and it is this sheer size which has made the restructuring process even more painful.
