Oz Cooperation Essential to NZ Defence
Australian Co-Operation Essential to New Zealand Defence Policy
New Zealand’s special military relationship with Australia was recently highlighted by the support three RNZAF Andovers of No 42 Squadron were able to give Australian ground forces in Somalia.
Through UNITAF, the United Nations group coordinating relief activities in the troubled African nation, the New Zealanders provided direct support to the Australian battalion stationed in Baidoa, flying a twice weekly mail run and ferrying up to thirty troops at a time for rest and recreation in Nairobi. Because of their size the Andovers were better suited to this work than the C-130 Hercules deployed by other nations into Somalia.
Then during May, after high level discussions between the New Zealand and Australian defence forces, the Andovers were specifically ordered to assist the Australian withdrawal. The New Zealanders stayed in Somalia for an additional fortnight, working alongside RAAF C-130 Hercules to shuttle the Australian troops from Baidoa into Mogadishu.
