• The Australian Aircraft Consortium Pty Ltd showed a full size engineering mock-up of the Australian Basic Trainer in Melbourne on August 16. It was produced by the three major subcontractors, Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation, Government Aircraft Factories and Hawker de Havilland. The roll out of the first prototype is scheduled for December 1984 and the first flight has been set for February 1985.

• As a follow on to its decision to use “MD” in place of “DC” for new aircraft developed beyond the DC-10, McDonnell Douglas will now use the MD designation for the DC-9 Super 80 Series. The specific models with different engine versions, weights and fuel capacities will be known as the MD-81, MD-82 and MD-83 while the projected short fuselage version will be the MD-90.
