50 Years Ago…

August 1-Sardinia. 458 (Wellington) Squadron, now part of No 328 Wing, continues antishipping sorties. F/Lt Douglas and crew are shot down attacking a heavy cruiser off Sardinia. Sicily. 450 (Kittyhawk) Squadron flies in from Malta. Sgt Fourneau’s engine fails and he ditches. His No 2, Major Theron (SAAF), circles his dinghy for an hour until he is recovered by an RAF Rescue launch.

Britain. Three 455 Squadron Hampdens attack a convoy consisting of a destroyer, two merchant vessels and two flak ships off Norway. F/Sgt H Jones sinks a merchant vessel. Bay of Biscay. 10 Squadron Sunderland W4020/B captained by F/Lt Bob Fry is crippled by AA fire attacking the U-454. Just after the ruptured German submarine sinks, the Sunderland crashes while force landing in heavy swell. Six of Fry’s crew survive, rescued by HMS Wren.
