Airtest – Speedtwin
The Speedtwin A Test Pilot’s Dream Come True!
Would you deliberately spin a twin? Loop and roll a two engined aircraft? You might think I am joking, but I have just been doing aerobatics in a twin that was made for them.
By any standards Englishman Peter Phillips’s Speedtwin is unconventional. You might not think there would be much call in the ‘nineties for a homebuilt fixed pitch, fixed undercarriage, aerobatic, tandem two seat, tailwheel twin; but Peter expects to sell plenty of kits to pilots wanting the ultimate in superb visibility and handling perfection and who will take pride in owning a truly unique aircraft.
Peter is a fascinating character. An RAF fighter pilot in the halcyon days of Britain’s postwar aviation boom, he flew Meteors, Vampires and Sabres. Selected as display pilot, he represented both CFS and Fighter Command, perfecting his party piece, the four point vertical roll. Leaving the RAF in 1962, he quit professional flying for a while to indulge his passion for invention and innovation. Forming PBC Designs and Developments Ltd, he produced and marketed, among other things, coin operated petrol station fuel pumps, land yachts and a three legged shooting stick. Meanwhile, unable to break his display flying addiction, he flew Stampesat airshows all around Britain.
