Are You Aware of Your Personal Tax Deductions Arising From Working in the Aviation Industry

It is one of those things that nobody really likes to think about: the annual sharpening of pencils to work on your tax return.

Or, if you are fortunate, you will just be taking your shoebox full of receipts to your local accountant to let him handle the matter. But before sharpening your pencil or closing the lid on the shoebox, take note that the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has come out with a Draft Taxation Ruling which discusses the types of work related deductions that may be claimed by employees within the aviation industry. And although not a Final Ruling, a Draft Taxation Ruling gives some idea of how the ATO may rule on a particular taxpayer’s claim.

As a general rule, the ATO will allow a deduction if a taxpayer incurs the claim in gaining or producing assessable income for himself. So, the taxpayer must demonstrate how the claim was incurred. Once that hurdle is overcome, a more detailed examination of the claim may have to be undertaken.
