Boeing is developing an upgrade for NATO's 18 E-3A Sentry AWACS aircraft. The Mod Block 1 programme includes the fitting of colour display screens, Have Quick UHF radios and the Unk 16 version of the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, which will allow better air-to-air and air-to-ground communications.

Our thanks to reader Oliver Mann from Casuarina NT for sending us the following snippet from the Burnie Port Gazette. Under the heading Traffic Lights Solve Runway Poser’: “Burnie Airport may have the distinction of being the only airport in Australia with a railway line crossing its runway but it is a distinction which creates its own special problems. Until recently, flight services personnel in the tower either warned approaching aircraft if a train was crossing the runway or stopped the train by triggering a light on the track.
“However, that system went by the board with the removal of flight services from the airport. The Burnie Port Authority, which owns the airport, has the problem well in hand following the installation of an automatic traffic light system on the runway. When there is no train in the area, three green lights tell the aircraft (or at least its pilot] it is safe to take off or land.
