Register Review

An interesting variety of aircraft make up the New Allocations this month including a MiG-17, a Pilatus Turbo Porter and a second Globe Swift.

ALG is Australia’s first MiG-17 and joins three MiG-15s and a MiG-21 on the register. The MiG-17 Fresco was a direct development of the MiG-15 which it began to replace in the Soviet Air Force from 1953. The type was license built in Poland, Czechoslovakia and China and was still operational with over two dozen air forces throughout the world in 1989. ALG is an F model powered by a VK-1A turbojet with afterburner and in its original form was fitted with underwing fuel tanks. The 17F was the most widely used daytime fighter version with a maximum level speed of 620kt (1140km/h) and maximum range of 760mm (1400km) with external fuel tanks. Armament was one 37mm and two 23mm cannons. Pilatus Turbo Porter ZCZ is the only one of its type currently on the Australian register although several have flown in this country when Forrestair of Essendon were the agents for the Porter during the 1960s. Forrestair supplied two aircraft to PNG as well as six to New Zealand where three are still active with Mount Cook Airlines at Queenstown ferrying tourists to the snowfields. ZCZ is the only ex Australian Army machine to remain flying in this country after the type was retired from military service last year and will be used primarily as a jump platform for a parachute club near Toowoomba Qld. Another two airframes will remain in the country in non flying condition and on display in museums. Following close on the heels of Tony Green’s Globe Swift, XTG, detailed in the March Register Review, comes a second machine, BYB. Like XTG, Mr Gibson’s Swift is a GC-IB model, but a later production aircraft. My information indicates that both machines were built by Temco under licence to Globe however Tony has recently advised me that his aircraft is a Globe built example.
