More Cuts at Wigram Rnzaf Base

Spending cuts continue to hit the South Island’s major air force base, Wigram. Two Iroquois helicopters – half the air force’s detachment at Wigram- will be based in Auckland by July in the latest phase down of activities at Wigram (where Charles Kingsford Smith and John Ulm in the Southern Cross landed in 1928, after the first successful flight across the Tasman, taking 14hr 25min).

The Wigram based Royal New Zealand Air Force Support Group will lose its long established responsibility for air force flying training, this key function moving to Auckland.
