Military
A large helicopter by any standards, seating 16 passengers, the Puma was designed to meet a military requirement for a twin engine, medium lift helicopter. The prototype first flew in 1965. The two Pumas on the Australian register are equipped with twin 1575shp Turbomeca Turmo IVC turboshaft engines. Although the AS 332 Super Puma has been in production since 1978 it wasn’t until last year that the first two appeared on the Australian register. The Super Puma, now marketed by the Eurocopter group (formed by the amalgamation of the Aerospatiale and MBB helicopter divisions), is equipped with two 1819shp Turbomeca Makila IA engines and can seat up to 24 passengers. As with the two Pumas, the Super Pumas are operated by Bristow Helicopters of Western Australia and all are used for offshore oil rig support. Number of Pumas registered at 10.8.92: 2 VH-WOD WOE Number of Super Pumas registered at 10.8.92: 3 VH-BHT BHV BHX AEROSPATIALE SA 341 GAZELLE (France) The Gazelle was developed as a general purpose helicopter for the French military services and the .series prototype first flew in 1967. Since then it has sold very successfully on the world market both in its civil and military roles. Power for the 341G model is provided by a 590shp Turbomeca Astazou IV A turboshaft and the helicopter can seat five. Whereas the two previous Gazelles operated in Australia were used by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife service, GKK is privately owned by Mr. Green of Sydney, NSW. AEROSPATIALE AS 350 ECUREUIL (France)
More commonly known as the Squirrel, this six seat general purpose helicopter first flew in 1974. The majority of Squirrels in Australia are 350B models equipped with the Turbomeca Arriel 641shp engine. Three – AWK, JRD and NBN – are 350D models which are powered by Allison 250 C30 engines. NLR is a 350B2 model and is equipped with new main rotor blades with a larger chord length, new tail rotors and is powered by a Turbomeca Ariel 1 Dl 732shp engine, all of which gives enhanced hot and high performance. The 350B has recently been replaced by a new production modelthe AS 350BA, which is fitted with wider chord main rotor blades, and has an increase in torque which gives the craft a greater maximum gross payload.
