The frequent flyer plans won't really do anything positive for either major except perhaps getting a few suits off Compass flights. Overall, it will only reduce their yield further whilst many of their frequent flyers, including most government employees, won't even get to reap the rewards that each scheme offers.

Opening Pandora’s Box!
The late August simultaneous announcement by both Ansett and Australian that they were launching frequent flyer programs came as pretty much a surprise for most of the aviation community.
A surprise because of all the US airline ‘fads’ that have emerged since they deregulated in 1978, the infamous frequent flyer program was always seen by our local airline execs as being something akin to corrosion in an aileron – not good.
