Major Airline Directory

Though Covering Only a Nine Month Period, This Issue of Our Major Airline Directory Covers Events Which Could Have a Far Reaching Effect on the Survival of Some of the Airlines in Our Region.

Events in the Gulf have badly affected airlines around the world. Passenger loads have fallen as a result of the threat of terrorism while costs have increased due to the rising cost of aviation fuel. Another impost has been the additional flying done by some International operators to bypass the Gulf region. For Australia came the long awaited arrival of airline deregulation, though to date only one new airline, Compass, has started operations. With the economy in a recession any potential operator is at present deferring a start up date. Deregulation in Australia, it appears, is currently no different from the North American experience. The travelling public have been swamped with a multitude of promotional fares and though there may be short term benefits for some, it would appear that most airlines are struggling to break even.

Orders for aircraft from airlines in our region are well down on previous years. In the nine months that this report covers we can only record 12 definite orders for new aircraft. In the two previous issues of the Airline Directory comparable figures were 76 and 79 respectively. Of the 12 aircraft, only 5 were for airlines in our region, Australian Airlines’ 3 Boeing 737-400s, and Air Nauru’s 2 Boeing 737-400s. The other 7 aircraft ordered, 2 A300-600Rs and 5 Boeing 737-SOOs were for Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services. AWA$ continue to place their leased aircraft around the world and present indicators suggest more orders. Their announced orders for the Boeing 737 and Boeing 767 have almost

been filled and it is only the Boeing 757 that continues to move slowly. As we mentioned’ last year, airlines in our region are finding it Difficult to get rid _ of their older aircraft. At present there are 23 F27s and 3 Boeing 737-lOOs sitting around looking for a buyer. Both major Australian domestic operators continue to fly their Boeing 727-200s even though they have taken delivery of replacement aircraft, for the simple reason that there are no buyers for them. Qantas were successful in disposing of nine of their Boeing 747-238Bs, a type that evidently still finds a ready market overseas. In this period 29 aircraft were delivered to airlines in our report, while 7 were sold overseas.

Fleet & Operational Changes (Ol/06/90-28/02/91)

Air New Zealand operated their lastFokker F27 service on 04/12/90, thus severing a connection with the type that goes back to late 1960. With the Friendship fleet withdrawn from service Air New Zealand terminated services in this period to Blenheim, Gisborne, Nelson, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Tauranga, Timaru and Wanganui. Current schedules show that Air New Zealand fly to only eight domestic ports – Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Invercargill, Napier, Palmerston North and Wellington.

The following Friendships are presently stored at Christchurch Airport while awaiting sale: F27-100 ZK-BXE, -BXF, -BXG, -BXH, -BXI; F27-500 ZK-NAN, -NAO, -NFA, -NFB, -NFD, -NFE, -NFF, -NFH, -NFI, -NFJ. In October 1988 Air New Zealand purchased a 50% interest in commuter operators Air Nelson and Eagle Air. Under the Air New Zealand Link Airline system these two operators have benefited by taking over many of the routes previously operated by the ANZ Friendship fleet. Air Nelson have consequently expanded their fleet to 4 Saab 340As and 9 Metro Ills while Eagle Air, who are based in Hamilton, operate 6 EMB-llOPl Bandeirantes.

In October 1990 Air New Zealand changed their airline designator from TE to NZ thus severing a connection with the past. The TE designator goes back to the days of Tasman Empire Airways Limited who commenced operations in April 1940 and were the forerunner of Air New Zealand. Air New Zealand added

two new ports to their international network in this period. Bali came on line in

09/90 with the introduction of a weekly Boeing 767 service from Auckland, while Bangkok was added in 11/90.

The Boeing 747-400 was introduced into service by Air New Zealand in 11/90. ZK-NBT was the second of its type to be delivered to Air New Zealand but due to industrial problems was the first to enter service. ZK-NBT msn 24855 arrived in Auckland from Seattle on 02/11 and entered service later that month. Air New Zealand’s first Boeing 747-400 ZK-NBS returned to Auckland on 31/01 after completing its lease to Cathay Pacific Airways. Boeing 747-219 ZK-NZZ was withdrawn from service on 27/01 in preparation for lease to Malaysian Airlines. Boeing 767-204 ZK-NBJ msn 23250 which was previously operated by Britannia Airways in the UK as G-BLKW was delivered to Auckland on 22/09. ZK-NBJ was brought up to ER standard by Air New Zealand maintenance before it entered service. Boeing 767-205ER ZK-NBD was withdrawn from service in 06/90 before delivery the following month to Air Pacific as DQ-FJA. Former Braathens SAFE Boeing 737-205 LN-SUT msn 22022 flew into Christchurch on 05/09 as ZK-NAQ on delivery to Air New Zealand. Britannia Airways Boeing 737-204 G-BADP departed Christchurch on 13/08 after terminating a five month lease to Air New Zealand.

Fleet & Operational Changes (Ol/06/90-28/02/91)

Ansett Australia came into being on 4 October 1990 when a new corporate image was announced for the then Ansett Airlines. The name Ansett has been with the airline since 1936 when it commenced operations as Ansett Airways. In 1957 with the takeover of Australian National Airways the airline became Ansett-ANA. In 1969 this was changed to Ansett Airlines of Australia and in 1980 came a further change toAnsett. Ansett Australia also unveiled their new colour scheme on 04/10 with the first aircraft to be painted being Boeing 737-377 VH-CZP.

On 17/02 Ansett Australia commenced a daily jet service on the Cairns to Weipa route. Equipment used is an F28 leased from Ansett NT. Ansett Australia added two further Al A320-211 aircraft to their fleet in this period. VH-HYI msn 140 arrived in Melbourne from Toulouse on 26/01 while VH-HYJ msn 142 flew in on 20/02. Due to the Gulf crisis both aircraft were ferried to Australia via the United States. In September Ansett placed an order with Airbus lndustrie for 10 A321s the first of which will be delivered in late 1995. As a result of the AFAP dispute Boeing 737-377 VH-CZO was one of three of its type leased to America West Airlines. VH-CZO flew out of Brisbane on 19/10/89 and commenced flying a few days later with America West as N144AW. On 28/06/90 N114AW returned to Melbourne to once again commence flying with Ansett as VH-CZO.

Prior to the AFAP dispute in August 1989 Ansett operated five Fokker 50s, VH-FND, -FNF, -FNG, -FNH and -FNI, from their Melbourne base. The decision was taken to close down Fokker 50 operations with Ansett and as a result VH-FND and -FNF were transferred to the then Ansett NSW. The other three F50s VH-FNG, -FNH and -FNI, were advertised for sale. On 05/10 VH-FNG flew out of Melbourne on lease to Austrian Airlines, Vienna as OE-LFX. The remaining two F50s, VH-FNH and -FNI, now carry the markings of Ansett Express though they spend most of their time on the ground in Melbourne. F27-600 VH-FNQ ferried out of Melbourne on 07/11 on delivery to Rex Aviation in New Zealand with whom it has since been registered ZK-RTA. F27-200s VH-MMR, -MMS and -MMV and F27-600 VH-FNO remain in storage at Melbourne awaiting sale.

Ansett Express, which commenced operations on 28 November, was born out of the shell of Ansett NSW to better compete in the deregulated market. The Ansett Express route structure mainly encompasses that of Ansett NSW, however both Eastwest Airlines and Ansett Australia have transferred routes to the new carrier.

The first aircraft to carry Ansett Express titles and the new corporate colours was F28-3000 VH-EWF. Previously operated by Eastwest Airlines, VH-EWF was delivered to Ansett NSW on 23/10. As Eastwest took delivery of their BAe 146-300s they transferred further F28s to Ansett Express: F28-4000 VH-EWC on 27/10, F28-4000 VH-FKO on 14/12 and F28-3000 VH-EWG on 30/11. Ansett Airlines Fokker F50s VH-FNH and -FNI became part of the Ansett Express fleet in 12/90.

Ansett Express have added a number of new routes and ports to their network. From Ansett Airlines came the Brisbane/Rockhampton and Brisbane/Mt Isa routes, while from Eastwest came Brisbane/Mackay. Eastwest Airlines also withdrew from Norfolk Island thus leaving Ansett Express to operate flights from both Sydney and Brisbane.

Ansett Express leased a Queensland Pacific Mohawk 298 for the Sydney/ Dubbo route from 03/02. This arrangement continued until 01/03 when Queensland Pacific withdrew their aircraft due to financial problems

For Eastwest Airlines the highlight of the year was the delivery and entry into service of the BAe 146-300. With the BAe 146 came a new colour scheme and a new corporate image as East-West Airlines became Eastwest Airlines -Australia’s number one leisure airline.

Delivery of the BAe 146-300 fleet was as follows with dates shown as arrival in Tamworth: VH-EWI 29/08; VH-EWJ 29/08; VH-EWK 03/10; VH-EWL 01/11; and VH-EWM 05/12. Eastwest operated their first BAe 146-300 service on 04/09 when VH-EWI flew the appropriately numbered EW146 from Sydney/Coolangatta.

The delivery and entry into service of the BAe 146 resulted in a number of changes to the Eastwest F28 fleet. F28-4000 VH-FKO ferried Perth/Adelaide/ Tamworth on 16/08 on delivery to Eastwest. This aircraft, which was previously with Lloyd Aviation as VH-LAR, remained with Eastwest until 13/12 when it was transferred to Ansett Express. With the delivery of VH-FKO to Eastwest, F28-4000 VH-EWH was withdrawn from service on 16/08 and ferried the following day to Perth where it later entered service with Ansett WA as VH-FKJ. F28-3000 VH-EWF was withdrawn from Eastwest service on 11/10 and after overhaul and repainting in Melbourne was delivered to Ansett NSW. Also transferring to Ansett NSW/Ansett Express were F28-4000 VH-EWC on 26/10 and F28-3000 VH-EWG on 29/11.

Eastwest have also leased 6 of their F27-500s to the UK based Jersey European Airways. VH-EWY and VH-EWZ were the first to depart Tamworth on 05/08 and they were followed by VH-EWU and -EWX on 29/10, and VH-EWV and -EWW on 10/12. These six F27-500s VH-EWU thru VH-EWZ have been registered in the UK as G-JEAD thru G-JEAI. F27-500 VH-EWP remains in Australia as this aircraft will be used on a Department of Defence contract to map Australia’s coastline using laser technology.

Eastwest terminated flights to Mackay and Norfolk Island during the year, in favour of Ansett Express.
