World Traffic Growth Sus- Tained in 1990:

Preliminary International Civil Aviation Organisation (CAO) data reveals that total world scheduled airline traffic was up 5% above 1989 traffic figures, International scheduled traffic t being up 6%. Total international and domestic traffic performed by the ICAO’s 161 member states on scheduled services in 1990 is estimated at 235bn tonne km, international traffic being about 131bn tonne km. Airlines carried some 1. 16bn passengers on scheduled services, of which about 280m travelled on intetional services. Because seat capacity increased at the same rate as the passenger kilometres performed, the estimated pax load factor remained steady at 68% for total services and 69% for international services. Air freight is estimated to have increased by 3% in both total and international services. Airmail increased by 5%.

Meanwhile, despite the growth in passenger traffic, it is expected that the world’s airlines will record a combined operating loss of about $2bn for 1990. Soaring fuel prices com compounded an already difficult operating and high debt environment, and results for 1991 are not expected to improve greatly even if the price of fuel drops.
