Interscan Poised as Aviation’s MLS Revolution Begins

An important industrial opportunity in the arcane world of airport landing systems is about to open up and an Australian company, lnterscan International Limited, is poised to grab a lion’s share of the multi-million dollar market.

Between now and 1998, at all the world’s main airports, the precision approach systems – one of the most important items of ground based navigation equipment – will be replaced and modernised. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO} has ruled that the present instrument landing system (ILS), which dates back to the 1940s, is to be replaced by a new standard that will take aviation into the 21st century- the microwave landing system {MLS}.

MLS is to be phased in over a number of years, beginning this year. ILS services will be ‘protected’ until 1998 as an international standard (although some regions may decide to begin phasing it out as early as 1995}. Between 1998 and 1990, retention of ILS will be optional and most services will be withdrawn. After 2000, ILS will no longer be required under ICAO standards and MLS will be the standard approach aid.
