1990 Major Airline Directory
In our opening comments last year we made mention that the majority of airlines in our region were experiencing a period of solid growth and that future prospects looked good. Less than six months later airlines in Australia were plunged into the most damaging industrial dispute in their history with the mass resignation of the majority of domestic airline pilots. Most airlines in Australia are predicting losses for the twelve months ending June 30th.
Another 15 months have passed and there is still no solution to the congestion at Sydney Airport with its lack of runway space and terminal facilities. Any new entrant into the airline market will have to sit and watch theirprofits being burned up as their aircraft circle over Sydney waiting for a landing clearance.
In spite of all this orders for aircraft from operators covered by our Directory continue to surge ahead. In this period we have recorded a total of 79 firm commitments at a total cost of some $US5bn. Major orders in this total include another six Boeing 747-400s for Qantas to give them a fleet total of 14 by the end of 1991. Also for Qantas are seven Boeing 767-300ERs, which will take their fleet of this popular type to 12. Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services (AWAS) continue to place orders in multi-million dollar lots, though it should be remembered that they are ordering aircraft for delivery well into the 1990s. AWAS have added three new types to their portfolio in this period. They are the A300-600R, A321 and the Canadair RegionalJet. The East-West re-equipment order went to the BAe 146-300 of which the first of eight is due for delivery in August. The order for this British Aerospace jet was another blow for Fokker as their fleet numbers dwindled. In Australia only two F27s remain in airline service out of a fleet which was once in the 60s. Ansett are presently advertising for sale F28s, F27s and F50s while East-West are having trouble moving their F27-500fleet. In New Zealand Air NZ are looking for buyers for their F27-100 fleet.

In this period 32 aircraft were delivered to operators in our Directory, while a further 18 were sold overseas. A further 21 aircraft have been retired awaiting sale.
Our survey on orders and options on new airliners covers only those airlines detailed in the Directory. It will be interesting to see whether our 1991 Directory will contain any of the projected deregulated airlines

Fleet & Operational Changes (01/03/89-31/05/90)
In October 1988 ANZ purchased a 50% interest in Commuter operators Air Nelson and Eagle Air. Under the Air New Zealand Link Airline system these two operators have benefitted by taking over many of the routes previously operated by the ANZ Friendship fleet. In April ANZ withdrew from Taupo, Wanganui and Whakatane thus reducing their domestic destinations to 11 as against 23 only a couple of years ago.
The withdrawal from these three North Island ports also allowed ANZ to retire their Fokker F27-100 fleet from service. ZK-BXG, BXH and -BXI are presently in storage. The other two F27-100s in the fleet ZK-BXE and -8XF continue to fly the occasional service for Safe Air or Air Nelson.
On the International scene Kuala Lumpur was added to the network in February with a weekly Boeing 767 service from Auckland via Singapore.
Due to industrial problems with flight and cabin crew Air New Zealand were unable to introduce their first Boeing 747-400 into service as planned. On December 16th 1989 ZK-NBS msn 24386 was delivered to Auckland in full Air New Zealand colours and later that day it flew south to Christchurch. The following day it departed Christchurch for Hong Kong to commence a twelve month lease to Cathay Pacific Airways. To cover a capacity shortage due to maintenance requirements Air New Zealand leased Tower Air Boeing 747-130 N603FF between 28/9 and 10/10.
Air New Zealand continue to build up their Boeing 767 fleet and in this period they took delivery of three and placed orders for a further three, which when delivered will give a fleet total of ten. Boeing 767-209 ZK-NBH msn 22682 which was previously leased to China Airlines was delivered to Auckland on 2/12/89. It was followed by ZK-NBF msn 22681 from the same source on 3/1/90. Boeing 767-204 ZK-NBI msn 23072 which was previously operated by Britannia Airways arrived in Auckland on 21/5. All three Boeings were brought up to ER standard by Air New Zealand maintenance before entering service. In September Air New Zealand signed a lease agreement with ILFC for the delivery of two Boeing 767-319ERs. These aircraft ZK-NCE msn 24875 and ZK-NCF msn 24876 will be delivered in 1/91 and 4/92 respectively. A second ex Britannia Airways Boeing 767-204 ZK-NBJ msn 23250 will be added to the fleet in November. In December 1989 Air New Zealand commenced operations with their Boeing 767 ER aircraft on the Honolulu to Los Angeles route.
Douglas DC-8-55F ZK-NZD which had been in storage in Auckland since September 1987 was sold to US freight operator Connie Kalitta Services. As N806CK it flew out of Auckland on 1/9/89 thus severing Air New Zealand’s connections with this type after some 24 years.
During this period Air New Zealand leased two Boeing 737-200 aircraft. Ansett New Zealand Boeing 737-2A6 ZK-NEE was leased between 18/12 and 31/12 to cover a capacity shortage over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Britannia Airways Boeing 737-204 G-BADP was delivered to Christchurch on 7/4 to commence a six month lease. In January a $NZ300m order was placed with Boeing for six Boeing 737 aircraft for delivery in 1993 and 1994. The model has yet to be designated.

For Ansett Airlines this has been a period of major disruption as a result of the dispute with the AFAP. All Ansett aircraft were grounded on August 24th when the dispute commenced and it was September 13th before Ansett managed to get their first aircraft into the air. Initially Ansett moved their passengers with the RAAF and on International Airlines operating domestic sectors within Australia. Between2/9 and30/10 RoyalBrunei operated one of their Boeing 757s V8-RBA, -RBB or -RBC on domestic routes, with the capacity shared between Ansett and Australian. Ansett also leased eight aircraft from overseas airlines between 18/9 and 31/3 as follows-America West 737-33A Nl66AW from 18/9 till 3/3, Nl67AW from 18/9 till 6/2 and Nl68AW from 9/11 till 16/1-Yugoslav Airlines 737-3H9 YU-AND from 15/11 till 30/12 and YU-ANJ from 15/11 till 16/1. Paramount 737-33A G-PATE between 9/11 and 31/3, Air 2000 757-23A G-0001 from 27/10 till 31/3 and G-OOOJ from 8/11 till 3/3. While Ansett were rebuilding their own fleet these overseas charter aircraft operated 5,702 flight stages and carried 605,000 passengers Also as a resuIt of the pilots disputeAnsett leased three of their737-377s to America West. VH-CZM departed Melbourne for Phoenix on October 27th, while VH-CZO and-CZP departed Brisbane on October 19th. On arrival in Phoenix the three Boeings were painted in America West colours and registered N113AW, Nll4AW and Nll5AW respectively. N115AW returned to Melbourne on April 30th and re-entered the Ansett service a few days later as VH-CZP.
Deliveries of the Airbus A320-200 continued during this period. VH-HYD arrived on 20/3/89, VH-HYG on 28/4/89 and VH-HYH on 29/5/89. Further units of the Boeing 727-277 fleet were withdrawn from service and sold to Federal Express in the US-VH-RML departed 23/6/89, VH-RMM on 21/4/89, VH-RMO on 26/7/89, VH-RMY on 12/5/89 and VH-RMZ on 9/3/89. These aircraft have since been re-registered N243FE, N244FE, N245FE, N240FE and N241FE respectively.
This period saw the retiral from service of both the FokkerF27 and the Fokker F50 from Ansett service. Fokker F27-200 VH-MMO operated its last flight for Ansett on May 25th 1989 on the Hamilton Island to Cairns route. In late May 1990 it was decided to sell the Friendship for scrap so VH-MMO was gradually reduced to spares. F27-400 VH-FNO was withdrawn from service on July 19th. F27-400 VH-FNQ had the honour of operating the last F27 service for Ansett when on July 26th it flewCairns/Hamilton Island/Cairns. VH-FNQ was then ferried to Melbourne on August 21st for storage. On December 6th VH-FNO ferried from Melbourne to Blenheim to commence a lease to SafeAir. This lasted until May 21st when VH-FNQ returned to Melbourne. Also stored at Melbourne awaiting sale are F27-200s VH-MMR, -MMS and -MMV.
Ansett operated five Fokker F50s out of Melbourne-VH-FND, -FNF, -FNG, -FNH and -FNI. When the aircraft were grounded on August 24th Ansett decided to close down their Melbourne Fokker F50 base. Three of these aircraft VH-FNG, -FNH and -FNI are presently being offered for sale, while VH-FND and -FNF have been transferred to Ansett NSW.
On May 28th 1989 Ansett terminated services on the Australia to Port Vila route, which they had operated for Qantas. On June 3rd 1990 Ansett com menced a weekly Boeing 737-377 service on behalf of Qantas from Brisbane to Honiara. Ansett terminated services to Devonport on August 23rd as a result of the pilots dispute.

Ansett NSW, previously Air NSW, came into being on 1/3/90. First service to be operated by the ‘new’ airline was WX928 from Sydney to Coffs Harbour. This was flown by Fokker 50 VH-FNB carrying Ansett NSW titles. The use of these titles was to be short lived however as all Ansett Regional Airlines – AnsetU NSW, Ansett/NT and Ansett/WA now only carry the word Ansett on their aircraft.
Ansett NSW have gone through a very disruptive period mainly as a result of the AFAP dispute, but also due to the loss of several interstate routes, as a result of recommendations made by the NSW Air Transport Council. Ports lost to the Ansett NSW network in this period were – Broken Hill, Griffith, Merimbula and Narrandera to Hazelton Airlines and Moree and Narrabri to Norfolk Airlines. Flights were discontinued to Brisbane, Coolangatta, Mildura and Newcastle. Ansett NSW aircraft and crew operated under an Ansett flight number on the Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne to Launceston routes.
Fokker F28-1000 VH-FKB departed Sydney on October 2nd on delivery to Air Niugini. Prior to the dispute with the AFAP Ansett/NSW operated five Fokker F50s. With Ansett Airlines closing down their Fokker F50 base in Melbourne Ansett/NSW have benefitted by having two of the Ansett Fokker F50s VH-FND and VH-FNF added to their fleet.

For Australian Airlines this was a period of great disruption to their schedules as a result of the dispute with the AFAP. All Australian aircraft were grounded on August 24th, when the dispute commenced and it was September 13th before they managed to get one of their aircraft back in operation. InitiaIly passengers were moved with the RAAF or on International Airlines operating domestic sectors. Between 2/9 and 30/10 Royal Brunei Airlines operated one of their Boeing 757s V8-RBA, -RBBor -RBC on domestic routes, with the capacity being shared between Australian and Ansett. Also between 18/9 and 21/10 Australian leased various Garuda DC-10 aircraft to operate a number of flights on the Perth to Melbourne route. Australian Airlines also leased a number of aircraft from overseas airlines between 24/9 and 25/4 as follows – Aeromaritime Boeing 737-33A F-GFUA from 24/9 till 25/2 – Inter European Boeing 737-33A G-MONP from 8/10 till 27/3 & Boeing 737-3YO G-BNGL from 29/11 till 17/4-Yugoslav Airlines Boeing 737-3H9 YU-AND from 6/10 till 14/11 and YUANJ from 5/10 till 14/11-Britannia AirwaysBoeing 737-3T5 G-BNRT from 2/11 till 24/4 and Boeing 73-3TO G-BOLM from 3/11 till 25/4-Trans European Airways Boeing 737-3M8 HB-IIA from 15/11 till 27/3 and 00-LTA from 15/11 to 13/3 – Lauda Air Boeing 737-3Z9 OE-JLG from 12/11 till 23/3 – Dan-Air Boeing 727-277 G-BPNS from 7/11 till 13/1 and Boeing 727-2J4 G-BHNF from 14/1 till 25/4-Monarch Boeing 757-2T7 G-DRJC from 6/11 till 21/4 and G-MOND from 10/11 till 29/3. Australian Airlines also brought to Australia Omega Air Boeing 707-344B EL-AJT however this aircraft was returned before entering service.
Al A300B4-203 VH-TAA returned to Australian operations in June after being on lease to Air Niugini since 11/84. As P2-ANG it terminated operations with Air Niugini in 3/89 and after overhaul in Singapore it ferried into Melbourne on 8/6/89.
Boeing 727-276 VH-TBN was sold to Air Vanuatu in 3/89. On the days when it is not flying with its new owner it is leased back to Australian Airlines. Boeing 727-77C VH-TBS was grounded in Perth on 23/8/89 as a result of the pilots’ dispute. The Boeing was operated by Australian Cargo on lease from Air Nauru. In the interim VH-TBS was sold by Air Nauru to Melbourne bas€d Sherrard Aviation. VH-TBS was finally flown to Melbourne on 21/1/90. There the Australian Cargo titles and name ‘Ernest Giles’ were removed from the Boeing. VH-TBS returned to service with Australian Cargo on 26/3/90.
Australian Airlines accepted delivery of the final two Boeing 737-377s on order to give them a fleet total of 16. VH-TJC ‘Endeavour’ was delivered to Melbourne on 1517/89, while VH-TJD ‘Gallant’ arrived on 9/9/89. The first of 11 Boeing 737-477s VH-TJE ‘Kookaburra’ was delivered to Melbourne on 17/3/90. By the time this is read Australian will have accepted delivery of three more of the type VH-TJF, -TJG and -TJH. Boeing 737-377 VH-TAX departed Adelaide on 26/4/90 on a six month lease to Inter European Airways in the UK.
After an association of some 23 years Australian Airlines disposed of the remainder of their MDC DC-9-31s. The five remaining aircraft in the fleet were withdrawn from service and sold through Australian Aircraft Sales to Airborne Express in the US as follows -VH-TJQ departed Melbourne for Long Beach on 24/7/89, VH-TJR departed Melbourne 21/8/89, VH-TJS and VH-TJT were both withdrawn from service at Melbourne on 23/8/89 at the commencement of the pilots’ dispute. VH-TJS departed for the US on 21/9/89 and it was followed by VH-TJT on 17/10/89. This left VH-TJU which was grounded in Hobart on August 23rd. On 2/11/89 it resumed operations, finally being withdrawn from service on 17/11/89. On 28/11/89 VH-TJU departed Melbourne on its Trans Pacific ferry flight to Long Beach. With Airborne Express the DC-9s have been registered N941AX, N943AX, N944AX, N945AX, N942AX respectively.
Australian Airlines and the Fokker F27 have also parted company after an association lasting some 30 years. The two remaining aircraft in the fleet VHTQS and VH-TQT were grounded in Cairns on 23/8/89. On 30/10/89 VH-TQS commenced flying with Air North over the routes it operated with Australian from Cairns to Weipa, Thursday Island and Bamaga. Meanwhile VH-TQT was leased to Spirit Air and it flew with them from 4/11 till 11/12/89. The following day it commenced flying with Air North joining VH-TOS on flights out of Cairns. On 22/5/90 VH-TQS andVH-TQT joined the fleet of Australian Regional Airlines.

Fleet & Operational Changes (1/3/89-31/5/90)
East-West placed a major re-equipment order in August ’89 when it signed a contract for eight BAe 146-300 aircraft with options on a further four. With first delivery in August ’90 these aircraft will position East-West for deregulation and further enhance them as Australia’s number one leisure airline.
East-West dropped Armidale from their network on 4/4/89 with Eastern Australia Airlines taking over the following day. Rockhampton services were terminated on 30/4/90 with Hamilton Island being added to the route network the following day. Though EWA are still licensed on the Sydney/Albury route this service has not been operated since the start of the pilots’ dispute.
In May 1989 EWA were awarded a Department of Defence contract to provide an F27 to map Australia’s coastline using laser technology. To meet the requirements of the contract F27-500 VH-EWP is presently being modified at Tamworth. The future for the rest of the F27-500 fleet, VH-EWU thru -EWZ is not so clear. As a result of the dispute with the AFAP East-West decided to withdraw all their F27s from service and place them on the market, however to date no buyers have been found.
F27-500 VH-EWU operated on wet lease to Air Niugini from 27/5/89 till 15/8/89. Though the F27 type was effectively removed from the fleet at the commencement of the pilots’ dispute most of the fleet continued to fly over the following weeks. The aircraft were contracted out to Aircruising Australia to be flown by their pilots either on their charters or with Spirit Air

For Qantas the highlight of the year was the delivery and entry into service of the Boeing 747-438. The first of six Boeing 747-438s delivered in this period was VH-EBA ‘City of Canberra’ which flew into Sydney on August 17th after a 9,201nm record breaking direct flight from London. Delivery details on the other Boeing 747-438s were as follows – VH-OJB ‘City of Sydney’ arrived 21/9/89, VH-OJC ‘City of Melbourne’ arrived 14/10/89, VH-OJD ‘City of Brisbane’ arrived 21/1/90, VH-OJE ‘City of Adelaide’ arrived 31/1/90 and VH-OJF ‘City of Perth’ arrived 8/4/90.
Qantas also took delivery of 767-338ER VH-OGE when it arrived on 7/9/89.
During the year Qantas placed orders for a further 8 747-438s to take their fleet total to 14 and a further 7 767-338ERs to take their fleet total to 12.
In May 1988 Qantas sold 747-2388 VH-EBG to EIAI Airlines. Due to a downturn in their forecast traffic EIAI leased the Boeing back to Qantas in 9/88. VH- EBG continued in service with Qantas till 5/89 when it was returned. to EIAI and registered 4X-AXQ. Boeing 747-2388 VH-EBJ was leased to Air Pacific in late April 1989 to replace the previously used 747-123 VH-EEI. During overhaul in Paris VH-EBJ was painted in Air Pacific colours. VH-EEI which also carried Air Pacific colours then returned to Qantas operations. In November VH-EEI, which Qantas had leased from Citibank of New York in 4/88 had its registration changed to El-CAI. The Boeing once again reverted to VH-EEI for its final flight with Qantas which was from Sydney to Auckland on 23/3. This then terminated Qantas’ lease on the aircraft, which after overhaul by Air New Zealand was delivered to Virgin Airlines as G-VMIA.
