The Series 61 proved a popular model along with the 62 and 63. Swissair enjoyed good productivity from their fleet till the last of the type were retired during the mid eighties. Today, Hawaiian still uses the DC-8 effectively on their Pacific islands network which, as depicted, includes Sydney. (Swissair & John Vogel)

Douglas DC-8 Part II
When unveiling the DC-8 for first time, Douglas announced that all of its projected versions would have the same overall dimensions.
Consequently, the series 10 to series 50 all have an identical airframe, with uniform electrical, hydraulic and airconditioning systems. Only the intercontinental versions differ from the domestic models and then only in having extra fuel capacity and other structural modifications needed to carry the extra fuel. Those modifications were limited to the use of a thicker skin and stronger materials within the wing structure, the aft portion of the fuselage and the tailplane. The landing gear was also more robust in the case of the heavier intercontinental versions.
