The history of postwar light aircraft manufacturing is littered with the bodies of interesting European and English single engined trainers which have failed to achieve their potential in the commercial sense against the might of American manufacturers.

Some excellent types have achieved brief production runs before their parent company has folded – the Beagle Pup being an outstanding example – while others have not managed to make it into production at all.

There is a perceived difference between European and American light types which revolves around matters of ‘design flair’, ‘styling’ and the so-called European handling characteristics which make for a somehow more pleasant and accurate feel to these aircraft, with better harmonised and more positive controls. This difference is real in most cases and leads to what is considered to be a better trainer.
