F-111 Avionics Update Bids Much Higher Than Expected?
The planned avionics update for the RAAF’s 22 F-111C Amberley-based strike jets remains targeted in Defence Department/RAAF planning but may be under cost restraints as to the full requirement and timetables.
The tenders by General Dynamics, the original manufacturer, and Rockwell came under evaluation in the second half of 1989, and the evaluation’s teams report and recommendations were concluded late in November. What has caused concern as to the way ahead, especially on funding, while the senior Defence committees examine the detailed recommendations is that both bids reportedly came in considerably over expectations.
