Ansett Takes on the World With International Leasing Venture

The diversified Ansett group are marshalling their forces to take on the world’s leading aerospace leasing organisations.

This is not news though as Ansett Transport Industries’ joint Managing Director, Sir Peter Abeles, has been promoting the company’s ambitions in this regard for more than a year and a half now. What is news to most observers is the intensity of strength that Ansett is deploying in an effort to become an international air transport firm.

It seems that over the past year, Ansett has literally purchased a batch of each aircraft type that is applicable to its potential market. Early in 1984, the Australian carrier surprised the industry with its order for 2 BAe 146-200s with a further 6 on option. It had been a long time since Ansett had purchased a non-American airliner though ideally what Sir Peter had hoped at the time was to be able to lease a number of these aircraft to China. Although this deal has not been consummated it is still an option as China certainly requires a significant increase in capacity in the decade ahead.
