Due to enter service during the course of this issue, Air Queensland's first ATR42 rolls from its Toulouse assembly hangar. Ironically, the new livery is based on the 'old' TAA livery. It will be interesting to see If the aircraft will be repainted in the 'new' TAA livery when that is officially launched this June.

Boeing 747 Fatigue Cracks Might Force Premature Grounding Of Older Aircraft:
Directives issued during late March by the US Federal Aviation Agency have advised operators of older model Boeing 747s to perform in-depth crack and fatigue detection tests principally in the forward area of the aircraft hull. This follows the discovery recently by BA, PanAm and JAL of a large number of serious stress cracks in the vertical Section 41 rib area beneath the front section of a number of high-time aircraft.
Operators will have to take affected aircraft offline for between two and four weeks to undertake the inspections and will have to perform similar major inspections at a minimum of two years in order to keep the aircraft airworthy. There are about 150 such aircraft presently in operation and this could render them. Uneconomic, greatly undermining the overall 747 used aircraft market. The positive aspects for the manufacturers, and perhaps a likely catalyst in launching the MD-11 trijet, will be an eventual surge in orders for new 747s, A340s and perhaps the longer-ranging twins.
