Relatively unnecessary traffic delays are Costing domestic and international airlines millions of dollars annually at KSA. Even much of the potential fuel efficiency of this Boeing 767 is blunted due to old-fashioned ATC procedures by comparison with overseas systems. (John Vogel)
Continuing ATC Delays at KSA
How bad are ATC delays at Sydney Airport?
Our ATC system at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport comes in for a lot of criticism with regard to delays but how does it measure up with comparable airports overseas?
First of all we must look at the number of movements at Sydney in relation to other major international airports. Sydney has a much lower number of takeoffs and landings than airports to which I frequently operate (eg London and San Francisco) and it would appear to have a much higher ATC delay rate than either of these two.
In the start up and push-back phase our system is no worse than overseas. Having different terminals for overseas and domestic aircraft help here, Airways clearances in themselves never cause a delay because you will be assigned a SID (Standard Instrument Departure) and cruising level based on your flight plan irrespective of other traffic. To me this is ridiculous because two international departures both bound for say, Singapore, at the same time will be given the same flight level when it is obvious that both cannot be in the same airspace at the same level at the same time.
