Scheduled for first flight in March 1986 with Swissair placing the first of eight into service a year later, the Fokker 100 is around 30% more fuel efficient per seat kilometre than the present F28-4000. Initial aircraft will have a max payload range of 1200nm but this will later be extended to 1500nm plus,
Update – Fokker 100
Fokker’s Airliner for the Future
It is ironic that in the dying days of its production history, the F28 Fellowship is attracting greater sales than at any other time. Fokker rightly discerns from this that their thinking on an F28 replacement, or perhaps successor, is right on track.
That aircraft is the Fokker 100, essentially a stretched and re-engined version of the established F28-4000 that blends existing engineering excellence with state-of-the-art avionics and systems technology.
The need for a jetliner in the 100-seat category is obvious. In service throughout the world, there are more than 1000 early-build 737s, DC-9s and BAC 111s. All these aircraft will require replacing in the next ten to fifteen years and while not all will be replaced by similar sized aircraft a substantial proportion will, this market according to Fokker will be worth at least 750 airframes in the next ten years alone. Add to this the need to offer a larger jet for the emerging end-to-end market and the need for a new technology jet such as the F100 is obvious.
