Qantas' six Boeing 767-200ER twinjets won't carry the now standard Boeing kit for overwater twins as all Qantas 767 routes conveniently track over or aside alternate landing sites. Boeing is planning Long Range (LR) versions of the -200 and -300 767 which will have max-payload ranges out to 6500 nm which will make them ideal for point-to-point sectors considered too marginal for the 747 and DC-10.

The Battle Of The Overwater Twins

Aviation has always been a fertile breeding ground for acronyms.

Some, like RADAR (Radio Direction and Ranging), find their way into general usage; some, like AVGAS (Aviation Gasoline), remain in long-term usage in a mainly aeronautical context; and some serve their purpose for a short period then drift into obscurity. I suspect that the subject of this article, ETOPS (Extended-range twin-engined operations), comes into the last category, yet this subject is destined to be a legislative hot potato for the next year or so.

The catalyst for the upsurge of interest in the subject is the emergence of a new generation of very long-range twin-engined aeroplanes. Up until the last couple of years the typical twin engined aircraft was a short to medium-range machine. For long flights over inhospitable terrain or water, four, or at least three engines was considered de rigour, both on the grounds of safety and indeed to provide sufficient power for takeoff with the necessarily heavy fuel load.
