Interview – Air Marshall David Evans
John Spiers Interviews David Evans
Air Marshall David Evans, AO, DSO, AFC, Chief of Air Staff, RAAF, nearly did not have an Air Force career at all until a bit of fast but unofficial footwork prevented his demobilisation, at the age of 19, at the end of World War II. His career includes the Berlin airlift, flight captain Governor General’s flight; command of No 2 bomber Squadron in Vietnam; Director General RMF Plans and Policy; and Officer Commanding RMF Amberley. In this interview with John Spiers, he talks frankly about the development and directions of the RAAF and its role in the Australian Defence Force.
JS: Can we start by getting a thumbnail overview from you of the rationale behind the changing structure of the Australian defence forces and how you see the RAAF’s place in this.
