Air Safety
In this occasional series by Ian Gill we examine the possibilities and pitfalls that can beset the GA pilot, particularly through insufficient flight preparation. While our mythical Charlie Hardcase may not be your average pilot, his predicaments certainly serve to remind us all of the need to treat aviation with nothing less than the maximum in terms of professionalism and pilot care.
Charlie was doing a mate a favour. Wally, who occupied the right-hand seat, was in the farm produce business and had gotten a good lead on a couple of truckloads of quality hay at an equally good price, but he needed to sign up the owner in a hurry.
He’d been to the area several times previously and on occasions had seen crop dusters operating from a strip on the property concerned – when this deal had come up Charlie and his aircraft seemed like a great opportunity to get there quickly and to impress the cocky at the same time.
