Is Departmental Inefficiency Strangling Civil Aviation?
The submissions put forward by our major airlines to the Department of Aviation’s Inquiry Into Aviation Cost Recovery all reflect a growing disenchantment with the Department’s role as overseer of the airways.
Indeed the aviation industry has had more cost recovery studies in recent years than bears remembering except that virtually all have resulted in another series of debilitating cost increases come the August budget. What has occurred in General Aviation over the past four years is now legendary, leaving this industry in an even worse state than would have been solely as a result of the recession. Additional DofA ‘paper shuffling’ requirements, ANC and fuel excise hikes have simply turned people away from private aviation.
