Ansett has its two Sikorsky S-61s up for sale as the Hamilton Island jetport has made these reliable but costly to operate aircraft redundant
New Jet Service To Hamilton Island The First Of Its Kind In Australia
July 7, 1984 will mark an important day in the corporate annals of Ansett Airlines, for it was on this day that they operated the inaugural jet service direct into a Barrier Reef resort complex.
What seemed an impossible dream a few years ago is now becoming a reality as Ansett and Queensland entrepreneur, Keith Williams see their Hamilton Island project nearing completion. To describe the total project in mere words is difficult. Already more than $50million has been spent, with an equal amount scheduled to be invested over the coming eighteen months. The runway alone cost well over $10 million and is fully capable of taking Boeing 747SP aircraft!
Hamilton Island indeed is becoming a resort of international standing and the link-up with Ansett provides that carrier with a potential increase in aircraft utilisation not available from comparable mainland-based operations. Ansett will, for the time being, be operating 10 737 services week into Hamilton including direct flights from Sydney and Brisbane. Those who have not visited the reef may not fully appreciate the full meaning of this as normally you can spend the best part of a day just getting from your home to the actual final destination as most other islands have to be reached by commuter aircraft, helicopter or launch. By flying direct into Hamilton, holidaymakers will maximise their leisure time while the airline will be able to fly more cost-effective sectors through having higher average load factors, direct routing and the elimination of an additional sector on an intermediate carrier.
