Fleet Fakker F-28/1000 VH-FKD. Fokker F-27/500 VH-FCA, VH-FCB, VH-FCC, VH-FCD, VH-FCE, VH-FCF.
Fleet Changes 1/1/83-31/384 The highlight of the year for Air New South Wales was the re-introduction of jet services. Fokker F-28/1000 VH-FKD which had been tried before in the early 1970s was transferred from Airlines of Western Australia to Air New South Wales in March 1983. After a period of crew training the F-28 entered service on 18th April 1983.
F-27/500 VH-FCB was withdrawn from service early in January 1983. The aircraft was flown to Melbourne where it was handed over to the Essendon-based freight operator, Setair. This lease lasted from 6/1/83 to 25/3/83 when Stair terminated operations due to financial problems, VH- FCB then became part of the Ansett Air Freight fleet being based in Cairns and operating a nightly return flight to Brisbane. During overhaul in Melbourne in January VH-FCB was painted in the new Ansett colour scheme, however in a surprise move it was then returned to Air New South Wales service. When Air New South Wales released VH-FCB on charter to Setair they added to their feet an F-27/200. This was VH-MMO which had previously operated with Airlines of Northern Australia and is the only aircraft to be painted in their new colour scheme.
VH-MMO continued in operation with Airlines of New South Wales til January 1984 when it was transferred to Ansett Airlines of Australia ownership. The recent order by Ansett for two Be 146/200s with a further six on option will probably see some of this aircraft entering service with Air New South Wales Operational Changes 1/183-31/3/84 The introduction of the F-28 into service opened up two new routes for Air New South Wales. During December 1983 a direct air link between Sydney and Devonport in North West Tasmania was opened up by Air New South Wales and East-West Airlines. The first service was operated by Air New South Wales on December 13. As well as introducing the first jet service into Devonport the F-28 was then used to operate the inaugural jet service between Devonport and Melbourne. On this route the aircraft operates on behalf of Ansett Airlines.
The other new route opened up by the F-28 was between Brisbane and Norfolk Island. This is a weekly service that initially had to be operated by an F-28/4000 of Airlines of Western Australia on behalf of Air New South Wales. This was due to the fact that VH-FKD had insufficient range to operate over this route. After modifications were carried out in Melbourne in September where VH- FKD was given additional tankage Air New South Walescan now operate their own aircraft between Brisbane and Norfolk Island. Air New South Wales have introduced jet services to the following ports from Sydney-Broken Hill/Cooma/Dubbo/Maroochydore/Devonport Newcastle and Coolangatta see the aircraft once a week as it positions north to Brisbane to operate the Norfolk Island service.
When East-West Airlines commenced $120 return fights from Melbourne to Sydney via Albury in March 1983 Air New South Wales were not far behind. Though Albury was not an air New South Wales port and they had traffic rights in or out the licence stipulated that they had to operate their Sydney to Melbourne flights via this part. Initially Air New South Wales operated their own aircraft, however they now use F-27s leased from Ansett Airlines.

Fleet Changes 1/1/83-31/3/84 F-28/1000 VH-FKD was transferred to Air New South Wales in March 1983. In a surprise move, which was announced on 12th April, Ansett have placed an order for two BAe 146/200 aircraft with options on a further six. The first will be delivered in January 1985 and will enter service shorty afterwards with Airlines of Western Australia. This no doubt is a move made by Airlines of Western Australia to compete against Skywest/East-West who are planning to start F-28/4000 services later this year on the Perth-Port Hedland and Perth-Karratha routes.
Airlines of Western Australia had options on two F-28/4000s for delivery in July and September this year, however it seems certain that they now will be cancelled.

Fleet Changes 1/1/83-31/3/84 For Ansett Airlines the highlight of the year was the introduction into service of the Boeing 767. Originally planned for delivery to see service by Christmas 1982 an agreement between Boeing and Ansett was reached for a seven month deferment. The first 767 VH-RMD arrived in Melbourne on 10th June 1983 and it was closely followed by VH-RME on 1616 and VH-AMF on 25/6. Ansett’s fourth 767 VH-RMG was delivered on 26th August With the introduction into service of the four Boeing 767s Ansett found themselves with an excess of capacity as none of the Boeing 727s that were being replaced had found new owners. However over the last few months Ansett have gradually decreased the fleet numbers of the Boeing 727 as follows- VH-RMX was withdrawn from passenger operations in March 1983. The following month it entered service with Ansett Air Freight, being used on a four retum fights weekly schedule between Perth and Melbourne. With VHAMX being cabin loaded, while its main competition, the TAA/Bloodstock 8727 was palletised, it was decided to send this aircraft to the United States for cargo conversion. This modification was carried out by Hayes Aircraft, Dothan, Alabama between October 1983 and January 1984. With the planned departure of VH-RMX to the United States Ansett Air Freight then acquired VH-RMZ and it first appeared in their markings in September 1983. When VH-RMX returned to operation with Ansett Air Freight in January it was used on the Tasmanian services while VH-AMZ continued on the Perth route. At time of writing further changes are taking place with VH-RMZ and Ansett Air Freight. VH-AMZ was withdrawn from operation early in April and at present is being painted in TAA markings in the Ansett hangar. The Bloodstock Air Services Boeing 727/25F VH-LAP was flown Perth-Melbourne on 16th April 1984 and is now parked outside the Ansett hangar. This would appear to indicate that TAA are leasing an Ansett Boeing 727/277 while their two A-300s are overseas and that Ansett Air Freight will use the Bloodstock Boeing 727/25F on their Perth/Melbourne route. Ansett have dry leased three 8727/277s to Air Wien Alaska for a three year period. The aircraft VH-RMU/RMV/RMW were withdrawn from service in October and after re-painting in Air When Alaska colours departed Melbourne the following month for Seattle.
Alter twenty five years of service Ansett have finally withdrawn their Lockheed Electras. The three aircraft VH-RMA/MB/RMC are all stored at the Ansett maintenance base at Tullamarine while new owners are sought.
Operational Changes 1/1/83-31/3/84 Ansett introduced a twice-weekly Boeing 737 service between Melbourne and Newcastle in early July 1983. This was reduced to once weekly in November and was terminated the following February due to poor traffic demand. The Boeing 767/277 made its inaugural flight for Ansetton 27th June 1983 when VH-RMD operated ANB from Melbourne to Sydney.
F-27 services between Melbourne and Mildura were terminated on 30th April 1983. Passenger loadings were dropping as a result of competition from Murray Valley Airlines who as a result of cheaper fares and increased frequency were winning the greater share of the market.
Further F-27 services out of Melbourne were terminated on 21st May 1983. This was on the route to Hamilton and Mount Gambier with Kendell Airlines taking over. Early in December Ansett inaugurated a once weekly Melbourne/Sydney/Port Vila Boeing 737 service. Ansett operates over this route on behalf of Qantas in competition with Air Vanuatu.

in March 1984 an agreement was signed with Lufthansa for the dry lease of two A300s. These aircraft were to be used by the Lufthansa subsidiary Condor Flugdienst for the Northern summer. While with Condor the A300s will operate in a 299-seat all-tourist class configuration.
Both aircraft were painted in Condor colours before departing Melbourne for Hamburg VH-TAA became D-AITA while VH-TAB was registered D-AITB. The last of three DC-9/31s sold through Australian Aircraft Sales to the United States freight operator Airborne Express departed Melbourne on 5th January 1983. This aircraft was VH-TJK which joins its sister ships VH-TJM and VH-TJN at the Airbome home base in Wilmington, Ohio.
To operate a four times weekly return freight service between Perth and Melboume TAA entered into an agreement with Bloodstock Air Services. Bloodstock had imported a Boeing 727/25F VH-LAP into Australia early in 1983 and they were looking for work for their aircraft. The Boeing was flown by TAA crews with the first service being operated on 9th June 1983. This lease was terminated in late March 1984 with TAA signing an agreement with Air Nauru to use their Boeing 727/77CC2-RN7. The aircraft will be flown by TAA crews and retain its Nauruan registration. First service for TAA was 16th April 1984 from Melbourne to Perth.

East-West/Skywest In October 1983 Skywest Airlines, who operated third-level and charter flights from their homebase at Perth Airport, were granted a full airline licence by the West Australian Government. This allowed them to operate over several routes in competition with Airlines of Western Australia. These routes were-Perth to Port Hedland and Perth to Karratha which could be operated by jet equipment, and Perth to Kalgoorlie and Perth to Geraldton which could be operated by prop/jet aircraft. Skywest placed an order with British Aerospace for three Jetstream 31 aircraft which would be used on the Geraldton and Kalgoorlie services.
In December 1983 Skywest took over the Tamworth-based East-West Airlines though present indications are that the two airlines will remain as separate identities.
With East-West operating a fleet of Fokker aircraft including the F-28/4000, Skywest confirmed that as the type they will use on their services to North West Australia. The F-28s will retain the East-West colour scheme even when operating Skywest routes. Fleet Changes 1/1/83-31/3/84 This was a very busy period for fleet changes as East-West rolled over their F-27 fleet and took delivery of their first jet aircraft. When East-West placed an order with Fokker in 1982fortwoF-28 andsixF-27spartolthedealwasthat Fokker would take the ten F-27s then operated by East-West as trade-ins.
The following F-27s have therefore been withdrawn from service and later ferried to Amsterdam. The dates given are when the aircraft was taken out of service at Tamworth. VH-EWA F-27/500 7th February 1983. VH-EWT F-27/500 13th August 1983. VH-EWS F-27/500 16th September 1983. VH-EWNF-27/500 11th October 1983. VH-EWO F-27/500 24th October 1983. VH-EWX 13th November 1983 The first F-28/4000 for East-West, VH-EWA, arrived at Tamworth, after its delivery fight from Amsterdam on 19th April 1983. The aircraft entered service on 30th April when it operated flight EW168 from Sydney to Norfolk Island. The second F-28, VH-EWB, arrived at Tamworth on 27th November 1983 and entered service on 6th December.
Operational Changes 1/183-310/84 The introduction into service of the F-28/ 4000 has allowed East-West to open up new routes, expand the sand put themselves in a better position to further challenge the dominance of Ansett and TAA in the domestic airline market. At a time when the two major domestic airlines were suffering a loss of traffic for the twelve months to 31st December 1963 East-West increased its passenger uplift by nearly twenty-four per cent. One of their major innovations for the year was to offer a cheap fare on the Melbourne to Sydney route. This service is operated via Albury and commenced on 9th March 1983 with a return fare of $120.
On 5th August 1983 the F-28 was introduced onto the Sydney to Alice Springs route and this was extended through to Port Hedland and Karatha Services to South Australia were inaugurated on 4th October 1983 when a four times-a-week F-27 service commenced on the Melbourne-Mount Gambier-Adelaide route. Loadings have been poor and East-West will terminate this service on 22nd May 1984.
A new jet service between Sydney and Devonport commenced on December 14. At time of writing the following East-West ports are now served by their F-28s-Albury/Alice Springs/ Coolangatta/Devonport/Hobart/Karratha/Maroochydore/Melbourne/Norfolk Island/Port Hedland/Sydney and Tamworth.
