Interviews – Kim Beazley
Since the demise of the Department of Civil Aviation in favour of the amalgamated Department of Transport during the early seventies, Australia’s bureaucracy governing aviation within Australia has largely been at loggerheads with the very people it was tasked with serving. This unfortunate situation was rapidly turned about when a new government, and a new aviation minister took control in March 1983. Kim Beazley is not only the youngest MP to hold a cabinet position but undoubtedly the most enthusiastic member of parliament to embrace the aviation portfolio for many years. John Spiers spoke with Kim Beazley to gain his impression of his past fifteen months as aviation minister and his future plans in this role
JS: I know it is early days yet but I would like to get some appreciation of how you believe domestic aviation in Australia could develop both within the current two-airline policy, of. which· you have recently announced a review, and what may follow this possibility when its time expires.
